strokesafe™ awards 2008

The strokesafe™ awards recognise the efforts of health professionals and community groups who support the national awareness campaign. Thank you to everyone who held an activity during National Stroke Week and entered the strokesafe awards.  View photos of all the strokesafe award winners.

The winners in each category are:

Hospital Team (Rural) - WACHS - Midwest Stroke & Rehabilitation Team (WA)

ImageThe Stroke and Rehabilitation team wore FAST t-shirts throughout the week and had FAST displays in the foyer of hospital and at the Aboriginal Medical Service.  A morning tea was also held for all hospital staff with FAST material on display.  Information sessions were given to staff at local residential aged care facilities about FAST, stroke risk factors and prevention strategies and were well received.  In addition to this, approximately 3,000 wallet cards were distributed by letter box drops and static information stalls.

Press releases were sent to local newspapers and distributed to WA Health Executives and an interview with local radio station targeting an Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander audience was conducted.

Hospital Team (Metro) - Equal winner Bankstown Hospital Stroke Unit (NSW)

ImageThe team at Bankstown Hospital had a display in the front foyer of the hospital during Stroke Week and used FAST posters to advertise their activities.

They conducted stroke risk assessments and blood pressure testing over four days and handed out FAST and stroke prevention information.

Four staff members went to the Bankstown Sports Club where they reached 100 people; three staff members went to Bankstown Trotting Club where they reached 48 people; nursing staff, speech pathologists and occupational therapists conducted blood pressure testing in the hospital foyer on the fourth day where they tested 32 people.

Staff of the stroke unit also held a GP stroke info night organised in collaboration with the local GP Division where 64 GPs attended.  There were four guest speakers whose message focused on the need to act FAST.

Hospital Team (Metro) - Equal winner Frankston Hospital-Ward 5G South (VIC)

ImageThe team at Frankston Hospital had an article in their local newspaper and interview on local radio with their stroke ward physiotherapist and Stroke Network Facilitator promoting the FAST campaign.

The Frankston City Council donated the use of a large electronic road sign to promote the FAST campaign and Stroke Week which gained the attention of their community.

Approximately 30 staff wore FAST t-shirts throughout the week and a healthy themed afternoon tea was attended by staff.

A hospital foyer display was erected as well as the stroke ward decorated.  Staff on the stroke ward could do an online stroke quiz and FAST was promoted on employee payslips.  The team also presented an educational PowerPoint presentation about stroke.

Workplace - RSL Care, Baycrest Retirement Community (QLD)

ImageBaycrest Retirement Community held a health and wellbeing session in conjunction with their local pharmacy where blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol tests were offered to residents.  The FAST wallet cards and bookmarks were distributed and morning and afternoon tea was provided.

FAST posters were displayed in the recreation hall and the event was advertised in the monthly newsletter.

The sessions received very positive feedback with about 80 people attending.

General Practice/Community Health – K
yabram and District Health Services Community Health Tongala (VIC)

ImageThis is the first time National Stroke Week has been promoted in the township of Tongala.

Staff at Community Health Tongala distributed a press release which was printed in the local newspaper in August and September and an information morning was held at the local pharmacy during Stroke Week, offering blood pressure checks.  A FAST display with information and flyers was set up around the town in shop windows and at the local GP surgery.

The display board remained set up in the pharmacy for National Stroke Week with stroke brochures available at the counter for customers to take, and the display board has remained set up for the months of September and October at Community Health Tongala centre.

A health promotion talk was conducted for the Senior Citizens Tongala and blood pressure checks and a display board was undertaken for the Christian fellowship group ladies "Pampering Evening".

Stroke Support Group/Community Group – Equal winner Bundaberg Stroke Support Group (QLD)

ImageBundaberg Stroke Support Group set up numerous displays for National Stroke Week.  These were located in the Bundaberg Library, and the foyer of both the Bundaberg Base Hospital and Friendly Society Private Hospital.  These displays went for the week except the display at the Friendly Hospital ran for one month.

A 'healthy snacks’ morning tea was set up outside the main entrance of the Bundaberg Base Hospital serving pancakes, fruit and fruit kebabs.

They also manned a display in the CBD of Bundaberg for two days during National Stroke Week and held another display at the Disability Action Week Expo which coincided with National Stroke Week.  One of their members was interviewed on ABC Radio.

The Friendly Society Private Hospital hosted a Stroke Awareness Evening, on behalf of the Stroke Support Group with a guest speaker.   They also distributed in excess of 9,000 FAST Wallet Cards in the Bundaberg area.

Stroke Support Group/Community Group - Equal winner Gold Coast Stroke Support Group (QLD)

The Gold Coast Stroke Support Group produced a banner for National Stroke Week that was used in three locations and advertised Stroke Week in local media.

They organised a display at a local shopping centre which was manned by the members of the support group and gained numerous expressions of interest from stroke survivors wanting to join their group.

With assistance from a hospital rehabilitation unit, 438 blood pressure tests were conducted by two nurses.

They were successful in having articles in their local media and also did some fundraising to raise $1500.
