where we find out more about each other and our recovery

Introduction

Postby ali » Tue Apr 06, 2010 11:23 am

Hi, my name is Ali and I'm joining Glen as a volunteer moderator. Great to read your postings. we all have so much in common.
I had a stroke at 40, I had two kids in pre-school, was working a couple of days a week and really into exercise. The stroke put paid to that, completely paralysed down one side and unable to speak.
Five years later I’m back at work in an easier job, exercising again and watching my kids grow up. I still have some deficits but mostly am beset by the wretched fatigue!!
I look forward to sharing with you all on Stroke connect.
Cheers, Ali

Hey Ali,
Welcome to the team, will look forward to meeting you in person soon. No doubt we will have much in common to share and discuss. Working out at the gym, is a regular part of my day, and I enjoy this a great deal. Pre. stroke, I could jog in the park, or ride my bike cross country, but since my stroke, the gym is a safe place to burn calories, and keeps me fit.
Hope you are enjoying moderating as much as I am Ali. Take care; will see you around. :)

Thanks for your replies, Elizabeth and Glen. My stroke was 5 years ago. I was on a Stroke Unit for 10 days and Rehab for 6 weeks followed by Rehab in the home for 3 months. After this I saw my personal trainer and swim coach intermittantly as fatigue allowed.
My Husband and family were amazing and I couldn't have done it without them. It was a challenge with 2 young kids at home but also a real motivator as my mothers instinct to care for my children really helped my rehab.
Fatigue is my real bug-bear these days, it slows me down and depresses me, however, life must go on and school lunches need to be made!!
My language and paralysis are much better. Although I have had to the slow the rate at which I speak down and I limp when tired or after a chardonnay!
I find talking to other those affected very beneficial because thay have a realistic understanding of what it's like.
Cheers
Ali
