Support Groups

Postby kcwilson » Sat Sep 18, 2010 12:01 pm

Hi everyone,

I have been doing a little research, and there doesn't seem to be any support groups specifically for younger disabled people or carers in my area. So I am thinking perhaps we need something.

Does anyone have a group like this that they attend? If not, if one was available, would you go?

A very good point you have raised Casey, and thank you for highlighting a need. If any one out there can see some benefit, and would like to respond to Casey's post, it will assist NSF to look into the matter. :) 8-)

I'm in Ballarat. With the support of my rehab clinic, I am looking at starting something for under 35's with all life-altering injuries. We wouldn't have the people to fill a dinner table otherwise.

Hi Casey,
That seems like a good idea to widen the criteria for the group - in Newcastle we do have a young stroke survivors group and Inotice that they are considering changing their name, maybe I suppose because nobody knows who can join - " who is young"?
Close by here on the central coast of NSW they have a group for working age stroke survivors - this name defines eligibility somewhat - Iunderstand the group is well attended.
Iwish you well in getting your group going.

Hey kc

I'm part of a Gen X stroke support group in Melbourne. It's mainly for youger stroke patients but not specific about age particulary. You could perhaps do a Gen Y?!

Hi Elizabeth,

I am progressing well. Living independently again and attending out patient rehab. Still making gains and kicking goals. In saying that it's been a welcome-yet-trying challenge.

I'm wondering- as there appears to be no young survivors groups perhaps I should initiate one in Melbourne?

Yes you should! I'm trying to do the same out here!

Young people need an outlet too!
