President, Mr Richard Larkins, AO

Richard Larkins is an Emeritus Professor, Monash University.  He was Vice-Chancellor and President of Monash University from September 2003 to July 2009.  Prior to his appointment at Monash University he was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne from 1998 to 2003. 

Before that he was Professor of Medicine at the University of Melbourne, holding the James Stewart Chair at the Royal Melbourne Hospital from 1984 to 1997.  Other appointments held from time to time at the Royal Melbourne Hospital included Head of the Division of Medicine, Head of a General Medical Unit and Director of Diabetes and Endocrinology.  He had previous academic and clinical appointments at the Austin, Repatriation Medical Centre.  His clinical and research interests are in diabetes, endocrinology and general medicine.

Professor Larkins’s qualifications are MDBS and LLD(Hon) from the University of Melbourne, PhD from the University of London. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering,  Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of the Physicians, the Royal College of Physicians (London), the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia and the Academy of Medicine of Singapore and he has been awarded honorary Fellowships by the American College of Physicians, the Royal College of Physicians of Thailand and the Ceylon College of Physicians.

Past positions held by Professor Larkins include Chair of Universities Australia, Chair of the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, President of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, President of the Endocrine Society of Australia, Chair of the Accreditation Committee of the Australian Medical Council, member on two occasions of the Prime Minister’s Science, Engineering and Innovation Council and a member of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health  Council.  He was a member of the Doherty Committee of Inquiry into Medical Education and the Workforce.

Professor Larkins has been awarded the Eric Susman Prize for Medical Research, the Sir William Upjohn Medal for distinguished service to medicine, the Centenary of Federation Medal and is a Fellow of Trinity College, University of Melbourne and an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia.

His current roles include President of the National Stroke Foundation, President of Australian University Sport, Chair of the Council of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Australia, Chair of the Incorporated Joint Venture Board for the Parkville Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Chair of the Victorian Division of the General Sir John Monash Foundation, Deputy Chair of the Council of Melbourne Grammar School, member of the Board of the Florey Neuroscience Institute, member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Sharjah and International Trustee of the Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah Foundation.

Vice President, Mr Bill Forrest AM

Bill Forrest graduated with an honours degree in law from the University of Melbourne, a commission in the Royal Australian Infantry Corps with the Melbourne University Regiment, and a master's degree in business administration from Harvard University.  After war service in Vietnam he practised commercial and corporate law in New York and Melbourne, most recently as a partner of Arthur Robinson & Hedderwicks (now Allens Arthur Robinson), with particular emphasis on aviation law, mergers and acquisitions and joint ventures.
 
Bill is a director of companies in several fields and is president of Chamber Music Australia, national convention chairman of the Australian Airports Association, serves on advisory boards for CPA Australia and the University of Sydney's Faculty of Economics and Business, and chairs Deakin University's Centre for Leisure Management Research.

Vice President, Mr Andrew Buckle OAM

Mr Andrew Buckle has been involved in strategic planning and product development, as a Company Director or Consultant, for the past fifteen years. Prior to that he held several senior management positions in the travel industry. He was a founding member of the cricket charity, The Lord's Taverners Australia from the time of its formation in 1982, serving as Victorian Chairman from 1985-1992, National Chairman 1992 –2007 and was a member of the National Council from 1985 to 2007. In 1992 he was awarded the Medal of Order of Australia (OAM) for his work with disadvantaged and underprivileged youth.

Treasurer, Paul Shanley

Paul joined JBWere as its Head of Finance at the beginning of 2010.  Prior to this Paul spent 13 years with the Aviva Australia group in various senior finance roles across its life insurance, business, investment platforms business and the general insurance operations of CGU Insurance.

In 2007 Paul joined the Executive team at Aviva Australia as the Group Director – Human Resources and served on the boards of Aviva Australia Holdings Limited, Norwich Union Life Australia Limited, Navigator Australia Limited and various other subsidiaries.

At the beginning of his career Paul also spent more than a decade in the chartered accounting profession across the audit, advisory, accounting and tax disciplines.

Paul has a Bachelor of Business degree, a Masters of Taxation and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.  He is married with three children and he is both a participant and keen follower in numerous sports.

Ms Dawn Oldham

Dawn was a number one rated investment analyst in the consumer sector whilst working for Merrill Lynch and Citigroup for 15 years. Dawn has exceptional financial and strategic management skills and has owned and operated a successful strategy consulting business in the food, beverage and retail sector.  Since having a stroke in 2010, Dawn has refocused her attention and followed her passion for helping women with finance. She has become a financial educator and confidante for women utilizing her wide ranging skills in finance.

Dawn has also served on many not for profit committees and councils over the past five years.

She holds a Bachelor of Economics and Commerce (Hons.) from Monash University, a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment as well as a Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning from FINSIA. She is also a Fellow of FINSIA.

Associate Professor Julie Bernhardt

Associate Professor Bernhardt is a Senior Research Fellow and Director of the Very Early Rehabilitation Research Program at the National Stroke Research Institute (NSRI) in Melbourne. She is an experienced rehabilitation physiotherapist with a special interest in stroke research. Julie completed her PhD in 1999 and, since her appointment to the NSRI in 2001, she has focussed on developing a program of research that aims to find evidence for rehabilitation interventions with the potential to reduce the burden of stroke.  AVERT, the first, large acute stroke rehabilitation trial is at the core of this program, and in 2005 the AVERT team was awarded an NHMRC project grant of $2.8 million to support this study. Through high quality research, Julie hopes to find more effective models of care for stroke survivors and then to see these models adopted into clinical practice.

Ms Irene Trethowan

Irene is a partner in the Commercial Litigation practice group of Allens Arthur Robinson.  She has been in legal practice for over 20 years undertaking complex dispute work on behalf of a range of leading financial institutions, manufacturers and government authorities.   Irene specialises in advising clients in respect of regulatory investigations and ensuing litigation (particularly in the areas of competition law and taxation) and class actions.   Irene has also served as a board member of Allens Arthur Robinson.
 
Irene has a B.A. in Diplomacy and World Affairs from Occidental College in Los Angeles, and an LL.B (First Class Honours) from Melbourne University

 

Professor Richard Lindley

Professor Richard Lindley is currently the Moran Foundation for Older Australians Professor of Geriatric Medicine at The University of Sydney; a post he took up in 2003. He qualified in Medicine at Newcastle upon Tyne and his main research interests include stroke, randomised controlled trials of new treatments for older people and frailty. He remains a clinical geriatrician in addition to his research interests.

Christina Tonkin

Christina Tonkin is Managing Director, Specialised Lending and Loan Product, Institutional and is responsible for strengthening ANZ's market leading positions across Specialised Lending and Loan Products.  The business is a “Centre of Excellence” for Institutional’s activities in Project and Structured Finance, Structured Asset and Export Finance, Debt Structuring and Acquisition Finance and Loan Products and Agency.

Christina has over 20 years experience in specialised lending and loan syndications, and joined ANZ from Westpac in 2005 where she held several senior roles including Head of Debt Products, Head of Loans and Syndications and Head of Project and Structured Debt.

She holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Geology and Geophysics from Sydney University
