President, Mr Richard Graeme Larkins, AO

Richard Larkins is an Emeritus Professor, Monash University.  He was Vice-Chancellor and President of Monash University from September 2003 to July 2009.  Prior to his appointment at Monash University he was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne from 1998 to 2003. 

 

Before that he was Professor of Medicine at the University of Melbourne, holding the James Stewart Chair at the Royal Melbourne Hospital from 1984 to 1997.  Other appointments held from time to time at the Royal Melbourne Hospital included Head of the Division of Medicine, Head of a General Medical Unit and Director of Diabetes and Endocrinology.  He had previous academic and clinical appointments at the Austin, Repatriation Medical Centre.  His clinical and research interests are in diabetes, endocrinology and general medicine.

 

Professor Larkins’s qualifications are MDBS and LLD(Hon) from the University of Melbourne, PhD from the University of London. 

 

He is a Fellow of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering,  Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of the Physicians, the Royal College of Physicians (London), the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia and the Academy of Medicine of Singapore and he has been awarded honorary Fellowships by the American College of Physicians, the Royal College of Physicians of Thailand and the Ceylon College of Physicians.

 

Past positions held by Professor Larkins include Chair of Universities Australia, Chair of the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, President of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, President of the Endocrine Society of Australia, Chair of the Accreditation Committee of the Australian Medical Council, member on two occasions of the Prime Minister’s Science, Engineering and Innovation Council and a member of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health  Council.  He was a member of the Doherty Committee of Inquiry into Medical Education and the Workforce.

 

Professor Larkins has been awarded the Eric Susman Prize for Medical Research, the Sir William Upjohn Medal for distinguished service to medicine, the Centenary of Federation Medal and is a Fellow of Trinity College, University of Melbourne and an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia.

 

Professor Larkins’s current roles include President of the National Stroke Foundation, President of Australian University Sport, Chair of the Council of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Australia, Chair of the Incorporated Joint Venture Board for the Parkville Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Chair of the Victorian Division of the General Sir John Monash Foundation, Deputy Chair of the Council of Melbourne Grammar School, member of the Board of the Florey Neuroscience Institute, member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Sharjah and International Trustee of the Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah Foundation.

Vice President, Mr Bill Forest AM
Bill Forrest graduated with an honours degree in law from the University of Melbourne, a commission in the Royal Australian Infantry Corps with the Melbourne University Regiment, and a master's degree in business administration from Harvard University.  After war service in Vietnam he practised commercial and corporate law in New York and Melbourne, most recently as a partner of Arthur Robinson & Hedderwicks (now Allens Arthur Robinson), with particular emphasis on aviation law, mergers and acquisitions and joint ventures.
 
Bill is a director of companies in several fields and is president of Chamber Music Australia, national convention chairman of the Australian Airports Association, serves on advisory boards for CPA Australia and the University of Sydney's Faculty of Economics and Business, and chairs Deakin University's Centre for Leisure Management Research.

 

Vice President, Mr Andrew Buckle OAM
Mr Andrew Buckle has been involved in strategic planning and product development, as a Company Director or Consultant, for the past fifteen years. Prior to that he held several senior management positions in the travel industry. He was a founding member of the cricket charity, The Lord's Taverners Australia from the time of its formation in 1982, serving as Victorian Chairman from 1985-1992, National Chairman 1992 –2007 and was a member of the National Council from 1985 to 2007. In 1992 he was awarded the Medal of Order of Australia (OAM) for his work with disadvantaged and underprivileged youth.

Treasurer, Mr Graeme Bowker
Mr Bowker is a professional company director, whose positions include Chairman of SSSR Holdings Pty Limited (Southern Cross Station), non-executive director of NZX listed company Tourism Holdings Limited, Bluestone Mortgage Group Pty Limited and CenItex. He is a member of the Institute of Company Directors (and its Victorian Council) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia. He was previously a partner in Deloitte for 25 years.

 

Ms Susan Aveyard
Susan Aveyard’s career of 30 years has given her broad administrative & management experience. Susan’s current role is Business Manager with ACT Department of Education, and previously was Governance Coordinator for the National Capital Authority. Susan has a Diploma in Business Management, and has held voluntary positions on many Boards and committees for various community groups, such as the ACT Scouts, ACT Swimming and various School Boards.


Associate Professor Julie Bernhardt
Associate Professor Bernhardt is a Senior Research Fellow and Director of the Very Early Rehabilitation Research Program at the National Stroke Research Institute (NSRI) in Melbourne. She is an experienced rehabilitation physiotherapist with a special interest in stroke research. Julie completed her PhD in 1999 and, since her appointment to the NSRI in 2001, she has focussed on developing a program of research that aims to find evidence for rehabilitation interventions with the potential to reduce the burden of stroke.  AVERT, the first, large acute stroke rehabilitation trial is at the core of this program, and in 2005 the AVERT team was awarded an NHMRC project grant of $2.8 million to support this study. Through high quality research, Julie hopes to find more effective models of care for stroke survivors and then to see these models adopted into clinical practice.

 

Mr David Evans
Mr David Evans is the Managing Partner of Evans & Partners Pty Ltd. Until June 2007 he was Managing Director and Chief of Staff, Goldman Sachs JBWere. Prior to that he held a number of senior executive positions with Goldman Sachs JBWere including Head of Equities and Managing Director of the Private Wealth business since joining JBWere and Son in 1990.

David holds a Bachelor of Economics degree having graduated from Monash University in 1988. He is also a Board member of Mirrabooka Investments Ltd, Healthscope, Essendon Football Club, Securities & Derivatives Industry Association and his most recent appointment was to the board of the Export Finance and Insurance Corporation. David has also served as an advisory director of the Monash Institute of Medical Research and Special Kids.

 

Mr Michael Hill
Mr Michael Hill is a graduate in psychology from UNSW who specialised in evaluation research of healthcare programs. He was a Charter Member of the Australasian Evaluation Society and served on a number of national committees. In 1990 he joined the Goss Labor Government in Queensland and was Chief of Staff and Principal Policy Advisor to three Health Ministers before being appointed Director of Health Outcomes in Queensland Health. In 2000 Michael suffered a stroke and then neck cancer, experiences that have transformed his perspective of healthcare as a consumer.

After a successful national and international sporting career as a fencer, Michael still contributes to the Queensland Fencing Association as a coach and as Director of High Performance.

Mr Paul Leeds
Mr Paul Leeds, until recently, was Chief Executive Officer of Global Communications Company Starcom MediaVest Group (Australia), a position he held for the six years. He is currently Chairman of Interpartners Advertising, Southern Hemisphere Network. Paul is one of the most respected leaders in the advertising industry being former Chairman of DDB Needham Melbourne, and CEO of AIS Media.

Paul’s current Directorships include Radio 3UZ Pty Ltd, Victoria Racing Club, and the Collingwood Football Club, and he is a member of the Advisory Boards for Deutscher Menzies and Barkleys

 

Professor Richard Lindley
Professor Richard Lindley is currently the Moran Foundation for Older Australians Professor of Geriatric Medicine at The University of Sydney; a post he took up in 2003. He qualified in Medicine at Newcastle upon Tyne and his main research interests include stroke, randomised controlled trials of new treatments for older people and frailty. He remains a clinical geriatrician in addition to his research interests.

Paul Shanley
Mr Paul Shanley is a Fellow of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and holds a Master of Taxation degree from the University of Melbourne and a Bachelor of Business degree.
 
Paul is Group Director Human Resources for Aviva Australia and is a director of Aviva Australia Holdings Limited and various subsidiary companies. Prior to his current role, Paul held senior finance management roles within the Aviva Australia and CGU Insurance Australia groups. Paul also worked in professional practice as a chartered accountant for over a decade.
 
Paul is a consumer representative on the Australian Stroke Coalition having suffered a stroke himself in early 2007 at age 43. Paul is also a member of the Carer and Consumer Reference Group at Caulfield Hospital and serves on the Victorian Corporate Advisory Panel of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.
