The National Stroke Foundation is committed to funding high quality research and has developed a strategic research strategy which addresses gaps in knowledge and meets priority needs for stroke care.

The development of the strategy has been overseen by a Research Advisory Committee chaired by Professor Richard Lindley.

Committee members include Associate Professor Julie Bernhardt, Dr Erin Lalor and Associate Professor Chris Levi.

ImageCongratulations to Stroke Foundation Research Fellow Dr Annie McCluskey, The University of Sydney.

Annie has been awarded a prestigious NHMRC Project Grant for $566,600 for her continuing research.  The grant allows Dr McCluskey to undertake the 'Out-and-About Trial', investigating ways to improve quality of life by increasing outdoor journeys after stroke. At the same time, she will be helping to get evidence into practice from the national stroke guidelines.

In 2008, Dr McCluskey was awarded the Veolia Environmental Services research grant from the National Stroke Foundation to begin this research. In 2009, she became one of the first National Stroke Foundation Research Fellows.

The NSF research policy aims to increase Australian stroke research capacity and help stroke researchers achieve a competitive track record. We are pleased to have been part of the greater grant scheme, enabling Dr McCluskey to further her research and increase awareness of stroke in society.

The NHMRC Project Grants funding scheme is NHMRC's main avenue of support for individuals and teams of researchers undertaking biomedical, clinical, public health and health services research in Australian universities, medical schools, hospitals or other research institutions.

The primary objective of the NHMRC Project Grants scheme is to support individual researchers and research teams to conduct the highest quality research across all fields of research relevant to health, on projects chosen by researchers. In Dr McCluskey's case, her multidisciplinary team involves researchers from Australia, Canada and England.

The NHMRC Project Grants scheme also aims to provide opportunities for early career researchers such as Dr McCluskey to gain funding for high quality projects.
